Accesso is a proud Junior Achievement company, but many people don't know what a JA Company even is.
Junior Achievement Worldwide is a non-for-profit organization that works with local businesses, schools, and organizations to deliver experiential learning programs that equips young people with the employment and entrepreneurship skill sets and mindsets they need to succeed. For the second year in a row, they were ranked the 7th most impactful NGOs by NGO Advisor.
Accesso is a part of JA’s Company Program in Central Ontario. Company Program is one of the dozens of different programs that JA offers for students. Company Program is an after school program for high school students that allows them to create and run their own companies. Students from various high schools are grouped together and given a host company. For us, it’s Celestica, and they provide us with advisors who are employees of that company that guide us through the program, and advise us on ways to continue to improve our company.
Here is a brief outline of how Company Program runs:
Weeks 1 - 2: Meet your team and mentors! Teams range anywhere from about 10-40 students and mentors range anywhere from 3 - 20+ mentors depending on your location. Companies also start ideating for what kind of company you want to create!
Week 3: Elections for the executive team. There are 8 executives, there is a president that oversees the executive team and 7 VPs that oversee each department.
Weeks 4 - 6: Brainstorm different ideas for the product/service you want to create and then decide as a company which you want to do.
Weeks 7 - 16: Make that company!
Week 17: Liquidate the company.
Week 18: Hand out shares and conclude the program!
Every student who participates in company program leaves knowing more about leadership, business, teamwork, and many more essential skills. Companies like Accesso would not exist without JA.
